Kingston Sinkhole Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Microbanana: I'm honestly surprised that anyone would blatantly steal from a private front lawn, but that appears to be the case here. As short-lived as it was, I hope the finders enjoyed the cache while it lasted.

Geocache Description:

A regular-size cache near the locally infamous sinkhole location.

The Kingston Sinkhole

Backstory

Eighty feet below the surface of Washington Avenue, there is a hundred-year-old tunnel constructed to transport waste water to the Roundout Creek. Although problems were evident as far back as March 2011, it wasn't until April of 2012 that a large sinkhole opened up in the middle of the street. This resulted in the closure of a frequently traversed road and millions of dollars in repairs.

As of this writing in April 2015, the road remains closed [but open to local traffic] after more than four years since initial signs of damage. Multiple contractors have already been involved, with [hopefully] final repairs planned to be completed before the end of the year. Including planned repairs, the total cost of the sinkhole has burdened the city by almost eight million dollars. As one could imagine, the sinkhole has become rather infamous with locals due to the controversial cost, effect on traffic, and as a joke in reference to the city-wide road conditions about how the 'city is sinking.'

The Cache

The cache is an ammo box located in a nearby resident's front yard. Permission to place the cache here was acquired and the cache is easily accessible from the road without disturbing anyone's property.

Keep in mind: the owner of the property is the only one aware of the cache's existence, so you will need to use stealth. Although the area isn't busy during the current road closure, this cache will likely be here after the road opens at which time there may be traffic nearby.

  • Despite being on private property [with permission,] the cache is easy to access without blatantly walking across anyone's lawn. Please be respectful toward the property.
  • Don't drive the wrong way on the nearby one-way street or park in front of the fire hydrant.
  • Practice stealth. You will likely be in plain-view of unaware neighbors. It may be a good idea to take the cache to your vehicle rather than open it on the spot.

Happy caching!
