Oman is home to thousands of dry river beds (wadis) ready to transport rain water that may fall in the scarce showers that reach the country. While these wadis can become raging torrents when water starts flowing, after a few hours when the water has receded, the wadi bedding will fall dry again and provide access to some of the most beautiful and unspoilt scenery to be found in the country. The wadi in which this cache has been placed is a good example of the breath-taking beauty of this rugged mountain terrain. At the end of the wadi after a tough walk of three hours, one way, lies an abandoned village which hosts the cache “The Machu Picchu of Oman”, GC4XNNF
To encourage more cachers to make the journey to this remote cache, a team of intrepid cachers (Manezinha, Navigator 46, TrueGeo and Camel Master) have hidden this, the second cache in the wadi. It is hidden next to a remarkable geologic formation that can be admired after a walk of about 30 minutes from the “4WD parking” mentioned in the additional waypoints below. When starting from the parking at the entry to the wadi, the walk will take about an hour.
The cache consists of a standard lock ‘n lock plastic box hidden some 10 m above the wadi floor to ensure that the cache will not be destroyed by the next flash flood. When searching for the cache please take care when moving rocks as any place that provides shade from the scorching sun is a favorite hiding place for snakes and scorpions. As it is difficult to get an accurate GPS reading in a narrow gorge surrounded by mountains, there may be some inaccuracy between various GPSr readings and the above coordinates. If in doubt refer to the hint, but please realise that there is no mobile phone coverage in the entire wadi!
