How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

At midnight on the 1st May 2000, the US Government turned off GPS selective availability. This meant that recreational GPS receivers became accurate to about 10 metres. Two days later on the 3rd May 2000, Dave Ulmer hid the first "stash" just outside Portland in Oregon and published the location on an internet forum. It was found the very next day. So that makes this weekend the 15th anniversary of Geocaching.

Anyone who finds a cache or attends an event over this weekend will get a 15 year souvenir added to their profile by Groundspeak. This is great if you’re a Geocaching souvenir hunter.

It just so happens that the 3rd May 2015 is the very first day of the year that Corstorphine Tower is going to be opened to the public. Its opening times today are from 2pm to 4pm. As far as I am led to believe access to the tower is free of charge, but please don’t hold me to that.

I personally have never been up the tower, and I suspect quite a few Cachers haven’t either, so I thought what a great way to combine Geocaching’s 15th anniversary with the first day of opening of the tower.

15!

The event is free and is located next to the tower. Start time is 14:00 with a group photo being taken at 14:30. That should give ample time for late arrivals. Once the photo has been taken the event will finish. But anyone wishing to hang about and go up the tower may do so if they wish.

Group Photo

If I’ve gone by the time you arrive, then I’m afraid you have missed the event.

Keep an eye on this listing, as changes may be made, I will post a note on here each time I make any significant changes. A ‘Will Attend’ log will get ‘Announcement’ notifications.
