The cache is located along the Selma Erwin Nature Study Preserve Trail. The preserve contains a number of rare plant species. The trail is a five mile loop walking and mountain bike trail. It is rated intermediate to advanced for bikers with many very technical areas. Expect roots, rocks, steep inclines and a few wet water crossings if biking or walking entire loop.
Take the trail to the left of the Trailhead. This is now the old Trailhead. You can still reach the trail from here . The new Trailhead is off Laying Farm Rd just to the North. The cache will be further from the new Trailhead. Stay on the trail until you reach the GZ as there are many wildflowers all along the way, many are rare or rare to this area. The cache is located close to the trail. Use caution near the GZ as ground is uneven and holes and rocks covered in leaves. We do not recommend this area for small children as bikers come up fast and the trail is narrow anzd rocky with steep drop offs to the side. These beautiful woods were a part of Central State Hospital. The land was not usable for them because of the steep terrain which also has creeks running through it. It eventually became part of the Oconee River Greenway. Local mountain bike enthusiasts and naturalists were responsable for putting in the trails. The preserve is 250 acres and has many trees over 200 years old. Enjoy these woods.
