Geocache Description:

This little Chapel Of Ease is a hidden gem originally built to ease the Church of St Peter.

It seats 126 people.

Built before 1282 but moved across the road and rebuilt in 1676-1691 by the gift of Anne, Dowager Baroness Brooke.

This Place of Worship was founded before 1282, and it is still open.

Kelly's Directory of 1923 describes Frocester as a small pleasant village and parish with a station on the Bristol and Birmingham section of the Midland railway, 11 miles south from Gloucester, 2 south-west from Stonehouse, and 5 west from Stroud.

St Andrew's Church was then described as a chapel of ease of the Church of St Peter, "which anciently formed part of the buildings of Frocester Court, [and] was removed to its present site between 1676 and 1691 by the gift of Anne, Dowager Baroness Brooke". The oak ceiling has the initials "E.W." on the cornice and the date "1637" when the chancel was restored by Sir Robert Ducie, Lord Mayor of London. It was said to consist of chancel, nave and a small bell gable over the chancel arch containing one bell, bearing the inscription "Come away, make no delay, 1719"; and have sittings for 126 persons.

Since then, St Peter's Church, which Kelly described as situated one mile from the village, has been declared redundant, with only the tower, and graveyard remaining; and St Andrew is now the parish church.

In the present day, it is one of the "Cotswold Edge" group of parishes, which also includes Eastington, Haresfield, Moreton Valence, Standish, and Whitminster.

St Andrew's is now the main parish church of Frocester, though it was formerly a chapel-of-ease to the old church of St Peter, which is now in ruins. There is a very interesting account of their joint history in the Victoria County History series, available online on the British History Online - Frocester: Churches website, which dates this former chapel to a rebuild between 1677 and 1691.
