CITO the Oaks Picnic Cache In Trash Out Event

This cache has been archived.

CraigsOutside: I want to thank everyone for coming out to help clean up this area. It didn't look it from the road, but there was a LOT of trash on the banks of the river and stuck in the snags . Somewhere around 14 bags and multiple other piles of carpet and blankets were removed. Well done everyone.

Geocache Description:

Join me for a CITO with the Forest Service in San Gabriel Mountains!

We'll meet up at 8am and perform some much needed cleanup until around 12pm.

Today's cleanup will be at the "Oaks Picnic Area" along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River.

(This event was formerly known as the CITO up Mt Baldy)

Ample parking is available. We will meet up with our USFS representative and will receive specific guidance on the cleanup. This is a popular picnic spot along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River, so carpooling is recommended. Adventure passes will be provided if you do not have one.

We will be cleaning up the riverbed/riverside area below the road, so sturdy shoes or boots are highly recommended. For those with limited mobility (knee, ankle/foot, hip, balance issues) I am sure we will have ways for you to participate in the cleanup. The Forest Service will be providing large trash bags and a stakeside truck to receive the trash and debris.

Drinking from the river is not recommended, due to upstream contamination. A 10 gallon cooler of water will be available for drinking water and clean up. There are vault toilets available nearby. Please bring snacks and perhaps something for lunch plus your favorite beverage. When we're done, we'll have our own little picnic at the Oaks Picnic Area.

Announcements with additional information on the clean up area will be made as it becomes available.

Recommendations of What To Bring:

Boots strongly encouraged
Gloves
Picker-upper
Long sleeve pants and shirt

Bagels and coffee from 8 to 830am while we gather up and get instructions from our Forest Service representative. We'll get started on the cleanup by 8:30.

Let's have our own picnic when we're done, pot-luck style. Post if you can bring something to share. I'll bring along an ice chest with room; I will bring potato salad to get us started.
