The Andy Griffith Show is an American sitcom which originally ran on CBS from October 3, 1960 to April 1, 1968. The show, a semi-spin-off from an episode of The Danny Thomas Show starred Andy Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor of the small community of Mayberry, NC Other characters include the inept, but well-meaning deputy, Barney Fife (Don Knotts), a spinster aunt and housekeeper, Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), and a precocious young son, Opie (Ron Howard). The iconic theme song “The Fishin’ Hole” was whistled during the opening credits, but did you know it has lyrics? “Well now, take down your fishing pole and meet me at the fishing hole. We may not get a bite all day but don’t you rush away. What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skipping stones. You’ll feel fresh as a lemonade a-setting in the shade. Whether it’s hot, whether it’s cool; Oh what a spot for whistling like a fool.”
