Geocache Description:

Having scored FTF on 'A Long Way From Home' (GC56ZMT), it seemed appropriate to hide another cache up here to see which mortals might challenge this terrrain.

Old logging roads continue to play a roll in the environment. Some become streambeds, allowing spring run-off to tear boulders our of the mountainside. Other sections of road become pathways for the local wildlife. These paths can also accomodate off-road vehicles such as quads and motorbikes.

And there are many paths. Some are fantasticly obvious, and others may leave you bewildered and confused. Without a clear map, it is possible one could get lost and not be able to find their way out of here. Fortunately, you all have your gps with you and can follow the tracks back. Bring extra batteries.

This cache is placed beside one of those old logging roads. Looking at the remains of this tree fills me with awe and wonder. How tall was it? What happened to it? Why was it left standing here when all the others were taken? Can you imagine the people that would gather around such a monster to cut it down?

The logisitics that would be involved in moving such a log boggle my mind! There is a lot to read about the Abernathy and Lougheed company that was operating in the area now known as Golden Ears Provincial Park. Heavily financed, they ran in to trouble in the early 30's and broke up. Here, way above the valley and camps that housed their operations, this silent witness reminds us of what was here before us.
