Trout Hollow Trail was inaugurated in September 2002. It is a beautiful, if challenging, 14km hike in Meaford, Ontario. The trail will lead you past some interesting ruins from early Meaford History. John Muir, (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914), was a naturalist, author and conservationist. He spent two years of his life (1864-1866) in the Meaford area, both living and employed by the Trout Family. John Muir had signed a contract to produce thousands of rake and broom handles. Being something of an inventor, he quickly helped them to double their production at the Mill. The burning of the mill lead to his departure from the area, and his return to the United States. Ruins of the mill can be seen on the Trout Hollow Trail. It may be interesting to history buffs, to know that letters written between John Muir and the Trout family, are on display in the Meaford Museum.
This cache has been placed to coincide with “John Muir’s Big Event” on May 9, 2015.
