Instructions for this Flashmob Event
A flash mob is a seemingly random get together by a large group of apparent strangers, to where the participants conduct an unusual group activity and then depart and go their own way.
For this event we will gather at the listed co-ordinates at precisely 3:00pm on Sunday 3rd May. The event coordinator will place a geocaching container on the ground at 3:00pm. Participants will form a large circle around the geocache container and we will then all sing "happy birthday" to geocaching. Participants will then open the geocache container and those who wish to can then sign our event logbook.
The flashmob phase of the event will only last 15 minutes, however the event will then turn into a social get together (still at the listed coordinates) and will continue until 4:00pm. At 4:00pm the geocache container and logbook will be removed and the event will be complete.
Please note that participants should bring their own nibbles, beverages and outdoor seats for the social part of the event
How Geocacing Began
On the 2nd May 2000 the U.S. Military flicked a switch which increased the accuracy of the GPS positioning signals for the 24 orbiting Global Positioning Satellites for civilian use.
The next day Dave Ulmer decided to test the new system by placing a bucket of items in bushland in Beavercreek, Oregon, near Portland. He then published the coordinates of his "Stash" on an online community and within 3 days 2 different readers had used their GPS receivers to locate the Stash and publish their experiences.
We all know that 2nd May in the US is actually the 3rd of May here, so this event is being held on 3rd May.
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of geocaching, Groundspeak are issuing a special 15 year anniversary souvenir for cachers who find a cache or attend and event on 2nd or 3rd of May, so you could earn a special Geocaching.com Souvenir for attending this event.
