Geocache Description:

At 74m the Mt. Damper falls is supposedly the tallest waterfall in the North Island.

A 20 minute, 1 km walk to a viewing platform starts from Mount Damper Falls car park, on the Okau Road off SH3, 59 km north of New Plymouth.

As the easy track crosses private farmland no geohounds please. The farm track may be muddy after substantial rain, but becomes a well-maintained benched metalled walk when it enters the bush. The track is closed 1 August to 31 October due to lambing.

The viewing platform provides a spectacular sight, particularly after heavy rain. The falls are surrounded by native bush and spill over a horseshoe-shaped papa bluff. The stram is a tributary of the Tongaporutu River.

The carpark lies close to the Tihi-Manuka Maori Trail, which linked the White Cliffs of the North Taranaki coast with the Taumarunui area.

The first European recording of the falls was by a Government Surveyor, L. C. Sladden in 1900.

Early settler H. W. Wilkinson arrived in 1909, and shortly after discovered the falls when his prize sheep dog, Lassie, met her death after being dragged over by a huge wild boar she had latched on to.
