When looking for hikes on Blue Mountain, Hayes Point gets all the attention. This is Hayes' little sister to the north that doesn't even have a name and I felt deserved a little recognition too. Unlike Hayes, this is foot traffic only. The distance depends on where you park. The round trip from the gate just above the folf course is 4.5 miles. I often do a winter loop from the MacClay flat parking area which is closer to 7 miles When the road is open, it should be less than half a mile. (This year, the gate opens ! May).
The summit was a pleasant place to hang out prior to the '03 fire. Most of the trees were killed and have fallen, but that did improve the views to the north considerably. There was a controlled burn last week on the southeast side which affected the cache placement. I wanted to be on the burned side of the fireline in case they burn from the other direction. As much as I don't like caches in a rockpile there wasn't much choice since there were still smoldering areas. I did pick a standalone boulder, about 5 feet high, with a pinkish cast and black lichen that should stand out.
