Geocache Description:

The National Trust owns and looks after the Hive Beach at Burton along with much of the open land along the coast eastwards to Freshwater and westwards towards West Bexington. All of this can be explored via the network of paths which includes a section of the South West Coast Path.

The walk to this cache will take you to the top of Bindbarrow with panoramic views of the coast and inland. The Bowl Barrow on the summit dates from the Neolithic or early Bronze age and close by is a relic of more recent history, a WW2 Pill-Box. Looking out over the fields and beach now it is difficult to imagine that at one time this coast was from a short period Britain's frontline and bristled with coastal defences.

From early in the war the beach was protected with lines of barbed wire, tank traps and pill-boxes, like this one. The groove around the top and hole in the centre are thought to have supported the framework of a thatched roof, as camouflage against aerial surveillance.

Towards the end of 1943 the tide of the war had turned and preparations were being made for D-Day, a large part of the U.S. First Army was stationed in and around this part of Dorset. As D-Day approached the similarity of the cliffs here to those in Normandy saw them being used as a training ground for elite troups that would spearhead the invasion of “Omaha” beach. Want to know more? Then take a look at this clip from the BBC’s Coast series.

There is a Car Park (N 50 41.833 W 002 43.28) close to the cache. There are public toilets at the Café, only open when the Café is open. The car park and beach are open all year round.

The walk to the cache is a gentle uphill stroll of less than a ¼ mile. During the spring and summer, particularly early in the morning and on the lesser used paths, you may come across Adders basking in the sun.

The cache is a well concealed "Bison" micro-cache, Please remember pen or pencil to sign the log. Happy Caching and enjoy walking the area. If you venture out towards the cliff edge or go exploring along the beach please take note of the warning signs, sections of these cliffs are unstable.
