Geocache Description:

IMPORTANT! Only park at the designated coordinates.  The landowner has granted permission for geocachers to park at the gas well entrance road.  You will have to walk up a gas company access road and will pass through property that is owned by someone other than the property where the cache is hidden.

The trailhead coordinates will take you to an old log skidder road to the left which will give you the easiest access to the cache.

This cache is with the 2015 CCGT Forgotten Clearfield County Geotrail. Use your CCGT passport to collect 25 codes found within each cache to redeem for your 2015 CCGT geocoin. In addition, if you have completed all five (5) years of the CCGT and you have your passport validated, a special trackable geocoin will be available in June. Visit www.visitclearfieldcounty.org/outdoors/geotrail for more information about the Clearfield County Geotrail, passports, geocoins and previous geotrails that are still open.

Clearfield County is full of old and historical locations, buildings, and remnants of by gone eras. Come and cache Clearfield County to learn about it's rich history through ghost towns, abandoned cemeteries Civil War uprising and it's rich Native American presence.

NOTE: Please do not place any food items or items with any type of smell. This area is the home of black bears which have a nasty habit of moving cache containers if they think a meal involved.

In the early 1930's, Benn Mott operated two lime mines for several years near this location. The cache is hidden at the remains of the stone kiln that was used to process the limestone.  Two local men remembered helping with the fire and shoveling the lime into a shed for Mr. Mottl. The burning process was accomplished by placing a layer of lime and a layer of coal and repeating that process until the lime was prepared properly. A large shed sat at the bottom of teh kiln and then the lime would be shoveled into the shed for storage after it was cooled. Mitchell's Store in Bells Landing would send a team of horses with a wagon to the site to purchase lime to sell at their store.
