"Shut Up And Leave Me Alone!" is one of the most tragic...saddest...and I think funniest...characters in Peanuts. We never see his face, nor do we ever learn his name. In July, 1971, Charlie Brown is off to his annual stay at summer camp. He's pretty bummed, wondering why he even goes, as he hates camp. When he arrives at his cabin, he walks over to his roommate and introduces himself. His roommate's reply? "Shut up and leave me alone!" All we ever see of his roommate is the back of his head. After the fourth or fifth time Charlie Brown is told to, "Shut up and leave me alone!," he walks away saying, "I love going to summer camp and making new friends..."
About a week later, Peppermint Patty and Marcie visit Charlie Brown. Peppermint Patty, with her usual flare, introduces herself to "Shut" and, well, you know what happens. She storms out of the cabin.
Schulz's quirky sense of humor gets quirkier a month later. Charlie Brown is back home and receives a letter from his roommate, in response to a letter Charlie had sent him. What does this letter say? "Shut up and leave me alone!"
"Shut Up!" used to reside in a remote location by a pond in Camillus, but eventually was washed away. Or so we thought. Apparently, the true story is that he became increasingly irritated by the one or two visitors he received each year and decided to close shop and move to another remote (and pretty) location. He may not be pleasant, but he does pick pleasing places to set up house.
