Geocache Description:

This cache is an extension to my loop around Little Burstead. It allows you to extend your walk to include other nearby caches, or to visit caches on route from Great Burstead and also the UK Mega 2015 campsite.

The origins of St Mary Magdalene church, which is a short walk from this cache, are traditionally linked to Saint Cedd. Cedd was a missionary monk and later Bishop of the East Saxons. He was trained by the Celtic Saint Aidan at Lindisfarne. Cedd's original chapel is at Bradwell-juxta-Mare and you can read more about his life by visiting my cache here.

The Great Burstead area was first settled by the East Saxons around 527 AD. It is understood that Cedd first set up his wayside preaching cross by a well near the road between Tilbury and Chelmsford, having converted Ebba, the Thane of Great Burstead. However, it is also reputed that the East Saxon King Sæberht was buried nearby and that he was a convert under the earlier Christian mission of Mellitus, who was the first Bishop of London.

In around 680 AD the cross was replaced with a wooden building by Edwy, the Thane of the area. The stone church we see today dates from the 12th century.

Another notable local, born in the area and later churchwarden at St Mary Magdalene, was Christopher Martin. He was one of the Pilgrims and a signer of the Mayflower Compact. You can find a tablet dedicated to him just inside the wall of the churchyard.
