Geocache Description:

The Wigwam Flats area is beautiful terrain for a walk or ride, and Class 1 winter range habitat for elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, and bighorn sheep. It is also prime lambing country for sheep.

The area can be accessed from either the Flathead or Elko sides, but the most common access is from Elko. Park at the given coordinates, at the gate just after crossing the bridge on the River Road. This is the same parking spot you would use to head up to the rim of Silver Springs and the two Haggis caches up there. The road past the gate is open to motorized vehicles from June 15 - July 15 each year and open to cyclists at all times.

The first 5 km to this cache is along a road which follows the Elk River (sometimes quite far above it). At 5 km the road forks. The right fork leads to an old homestead and then on to the confluence of the Wigwam and Elk Rivers. Only the right fork is open to motorized traffic during the limited opening. The left fork (the one you want for this cache) is always non-motorized and leads uphill to a plateau far above the Wigwam River. The old road crosses the plateau, and a couple of trails cut to the rim of the canyon, including one that hits the canyon rim close to this location. I have added the start of that trail off the old road as a waypoint on this cache. There is a trail along the canyon rim back towards Elko from here, which will take you past the Confluence View cache as well. THE TRAIL ALONG THE CANYON RIM IS CLOSED TO CYCLISTS BETWEEN MARCH 1 AND JUNE 15. This is to protect lambing bighorn sheep. Please see the map in the images below; the blue trail is the one that's closed. This cache is along the blue trail. Please keep your dogs on a leash during this period as well.

This spot has views of the Wigwam River canyon and its very cool rock formations that make up the Purple Canyon. Enjoy!

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along the way. While hiking out here I have seen mule deer, whitetail deer, bighorn sheep, and grouse. Enjoy looking and keep your distance!
