A PnG series along some of the frontage roads near the interstate. Each entry is named after part of the UIUC campus.
The McFarland Memorial Bell Tower was constructed in 2003, funded by H. Richard McFarland. Situated on the South Quad, it can be see from many places on campus. Plans for a bell tower at the location date back to the 1920s.
During construction, students noticed the tower's similarities to the villain Sauron's tower from the Lord of the Rings films. Naturally, several students climbed the tower and placed the famous "Eye of Sauron" onto the tower, further cementing the similarities.
