The Lancashire Heeler is a small dog which was originally developed for use in herding cattle, being energetic and strong enough to keep up with the moving herds. The breed is thought to have been developed using the Manchester Terrier and the Welsh Corgi, and a resemblance to the latter can be seen in the Lancashire Heelers conformation as they are longer than they are tall and usually have the large, pointed ears. They are most commonly black & tan in colour but can be brown & tan also. They stand at only 12" at the shoulder, and although friendly, playful and pleasant with their owners and family, they are known for being quite territorial and sometimes aggressive with strangers and passers-by. The Breed was recognised as a vulnerable native breed in 2006 as annual kennel club registrations fell to below 300, this figure has since fallen. These intelligent and nimble little dogs make great dog agility, Flyball and show dogs along with being strong competitors in herding events.
