About the Avenue of Comic Stars:


Hong Kong comics’ influence has gone beyond time and space, especially in Asia and among Chinese communities worldwide. Being a mature rival to Japanese comics, several Hong Kong comic works have been translated into more than 10 languages for readers all around the world. Affiliated creative works have been developed from comics. Such works range from films, TV drama series, novels, games, to toys, which have impressed readers for generations. To help Hong Kong comics explore the Mainland Chinese market, a Hong Kong Ani-Com Carnival was held in Shanghai during the World Expo 2010, Shanghai China. More than 20 figurines of Hong Kong classic comic characters were displayed at the Carnival which attracted more than 500,000 visitors.

With the aim to further promote Hong Kong comics, the world’s first comic-themed avenue of comic stars is set up by the Hong Kong Comics & Animation Federation, with the sponsorship from Create Hong Kong of the HKSAR Government. It is called the “Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars”, which is set to open on at the end of August 2012. Situated in Kowloon Park (East Wing) at Tsim Sha Tsui, and next to the renowned tourist spot, Park Lane Shoppers Boulevard, the Avenue features the painted figurines of local comic characters and handprints of famous local comic artists, as well as information on Hong Kong’s comic industry.

關於漫畫星光大道


香港漫畫一直在亞洲以至世界的華人社會,深具影響力,部分香港經典漫畫亦被翻譯成超過10種語言而通行世界,與日本漫畫分庭抗體。而由漫畫而衍生而成的創意作品不計期數,包括電影、電視、小說、遊戲、玩具等等,觸動一代一代的讀者。在2010年世博期中,香港漫畫嘉年華會在上海中展示的二十多個香港經典漫畫人物,亦深深吸引內地超過50萬的觀眾。

為此,香港動漫畫聯會向香港特區政府創意香港撥款資助,於 2012 年 8 月 建設世界首條漫畫星光大道。大道位於尖沙咀九龍公園內,旁為著名旅遊區柏麗購物大道,大道內放置著名漫畫家的手印及漫畫人物的雕塑供遊人拍照。

The 60s
A Vision of Life
During World War II, most of the Hong Kong comics were ironic and portrayed anti-Japanese heroes. After the war, picture-story books and comic strips created by mainland artists started to gain popularity in the market. In the 60s, the relatively stable social and economic environment gave rise to a new wave of local comics, of which most depicted the life of lower stratum of the community.
Representative works at the time include Alphonso Wong's Old Master Q, Michael Hui's 1001 Jokes and Lee Wai-chun's Miss 13 Dots.

二次大戰期間的香港漫畫,備受動盪時局所影響,題材多以諷刺謾罵,或抗日英雄為主, 至戰後, 市場流行稱為「小人書」或「連環圖」的作品, 作者主要為國內的美術工作者。
60年代, 香港人生活漸趨穩定,本土漫畫陸續湧現,內容大多反映小市民的生活情趣,具有影響力的作品包括《老夫子》(王澤), 《一千零一個笑話》(許冠文) 和《13點》(李惠珍)。

The 70s
The Rise of Action Comics
The craze of Bruce Lee's action films swept the city in the 70s. It also provided the lower stratum with an outlet for their emotions. Meanwhile, Tony Wong Yuk-long seized the trend and published his action comics, among which Oriental Heroes* was the most remarkable. The leading characters in Oriental Heroes were a group of Kung Fu fighters from the lower class fighting against the bullies. It was well received since the story disclosed people's wish for peace and prosperity. Other popular works include Vincent Kwong's Bruce Lee and Pak Kim-lung's Hung Hei Kwun and Fong Sai Yuk. Action comics gradually turned into the main stream. Besides action comics, Wong Sze-ma's Cowsboy with parental love as the theme was also highly popular among comic readers.
* Oriental Heroes was renamed Tiger & Dragon Heroes in the 70s and is still publishing today.

70年代
動作漫畫的崛起
70年代,由李小龍掀起的功夫片熱潮令香港人重新感受到作為中國人的自豪,此類動作電影亦為當時的低下階層提供了宣洩情緒的管道。與此同時,以黃玉郎的《小流氓》為代表的動作漫畫亦乘勢而起,*《小流氓》的主人公是一群功夫了得,出身社會底層的人物,專門鋤強扶弱,打擊惡霸和黑勢力,作品反映了當時人們對公義和社會安定的渴求,因而引起了熱烈的迥響。同期的《李小龍》(上官小寶),《洪熙官與方世玉》(白金龍)等作品亦大受歡迎,動作漫畫漸成主流...
除了功夫漫畫之外,這個年代,以父子情為題的《牛仔》(王司馬)亦大受歡迎。
*【小流氓】於70年代中改名為【龍虎門】並一直出版至今。

The 80s
The Golden Age of Hong Kong Comics
To promote a healthy environment for the industry, the Hong Kong Government introduced the "Objectionable Articles Ordinance" in 1975. In the same year, Tony Wong Yuk-long and Vincent Kwong respectively published a number of comic papers featuring daily comic strips of well-known comics, entertainment news and amusing strips, which has formed a unique entertainment culture. At the same time, young comic artists emerged, such as Ma Wing-shing, author of a Man Called Hero and Storm Riders, a standout in the industry today. In addition, new developments took place in this period, such as Jeffrey Lau's Feel 100% on teenage love, which Gum Siu-man's Sau Nga Chun created a new direction for comics of nonsensical humor. Li Chi-tat paved his way for comics as an independent artist by jumping off the mainstream with his philosophic and artistic works.
Prosperous economy in the 80s facilitated the development of the industry. Tong Wong Yuk-long's effort in the reform of comic production and its scale optimized the industry and a large number of talents have been trained. As a result, a group of talented comic artists emerged, including Ricky Chan, Han Man, etc, while some comic magazines were highly popular, leading to the golden age of original Hong Kong comics! A comic publication business can even turned into a listed company.

80年代
香港漫畫的騰飛
由於漫畫界良莠不齊,社會反響不一,1975年香港政府頒布《不良刊物條例》,對漫畫加強管制,業界也表現出正面的回應和自律,從而保證了漫畫業的發展,1975年,黃玉郎、上官小寶相繼推出多份漫畫日報:《生報》、《金報》、《東報》、《喜報》等... 將多部成名漫畫作品每日連載,再配以娛樂新聞、四格搞笑漫畫,演變成一種綜合式娛樂文化,同時更培養出大批漫畫新力軍,包括後來憑《中華英雄》《風雲》漫畫而廣為人知的馬榮成, 更是其中的佼佼者。除了動作漫畫之外,這個年代香港漫畫亦出現了一些新方向,包括以年青人愛情為題材的《百分百感覺》(劉雲傑)。另外甘小文的《哨牙珍》,開創出無厘頭的搞笑漫畫方向。除此之外,利志達以獨立身份開創漫畫之路,其漫畫跳出主流的題材和風格,帶有哲學和藝術的意味。 80年代,漫畫出版業隨著香港經濟騰飛共舞,特別是黃玉郎把過去家庭式的漫畫製作提昇改革為流水作業式管理,培訓大量從業員,將工序逐步完善,並改以期刊方式出版。由於人材不斷增加,一批具實力的原創漫畫家包括上官小強(作品:《壽星仔》), 漢民(作品:《猛鬼冤魂》(毛名威主編)等均大受歡迎,香港原創漫畫正式踏入百花齊放的時代!漫畫出版更是一門可作為公眾持股的上市企業.

The 90s
The power of Hong Kong Comics
Since the 70s, Hong Kong original comics have been warmly welcomed by Chinese people in regions like Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam in Asia and even in Europe and America. Up to the 90s, as the international copyright trading was getting mature, various versions of Hong Kong comics including simplified Chinese, Malay, Thai, Korean, Italian, English, French, German, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Saudi Arabian and Spanish were distributed globally.
For overseas collaboration, earlier in 1992, Lee Chi Ching was invited by a Japanese publisher to create the Japanese version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Outlaws of the Marsh and Sunzi's tactics etc. In 2001, Tony Wong Yuk-long edited the English version of BATMAN IN HONG KONG with DC Comics from the U.S., while Ma Wing-shing created the deluxe comic edition of the film Hero, directed by internationally renowned Chinese director Zhang Yi-mou. All these reflect the world-class standard and great achievement of Hong Kong comics! A group of new comic artists and comic works emerged. Representatives include Man Kai-ming's Teddy Boy, James KHoo Fuk-lung's Dragon Lord and Wan Yat-leung's Tiger Shark, among which Teddy Boy was the most popular with a number of film adaptions. Alice Mak's McMug (1993) was also one of the representative Hong Kong comic works in the 90s, whose comic characters have now been developed into successful comic accessories. Recently, McMug has been adapted for television and animation. Its popularity has now only enabled it to become an animation star in Hong Kong, but also won a couple of international awards, which is a glory for Hong Kong comics industry!

在國際市場上的影響力
香港的原創故事漫畫由70年代開始一直受到亞洲多個地區如:馬來西亞、新加坡、越南以致歐美的華人熱烈追捧!直至90年代,國際版權貿易日趨成熟,香港漫畫更以不同文字版本發行世界各地,計有:中文簡體字、馬來文、泰文、韓文、意大利文、英文、法文、德文、印尼文、越南文、沙特阿拉伯文、西班牙文等等,超過12個不同國家和不同語文版本。
海外合作方面,先有李志清早於1992年,已被日本出版社邀請編繪日文版《三國志》、《水滸傳》、《孫子兵法》和近期的《孔子》等作品,黃玉郎則在2001年被美國DC Comics邀請聯合編繪"BATMAN IN HONG KONG" (英文版),馬榮成則獲張藝謀導演邀請,將《英雄》電影劇本編繪成漫畫精裝本,顯示出香港漫畫家在國際市場上的超然地位!
漫畫家方面,主流漫畫冒出了新一批的主筆和作品,計有牛佬的《古惑仔》,邱福龍的《龍神》和溫日良的《海虎》。當中以曾多次改編成電影的《古惑仔》最為人所認識。另外謝立文編、麥家碧畫的《麥嘜》(1993) 是香港九十年代不可多得的港產漫畫,《麥嘜》的一系列卡通人物更成功開發漫畫精品。近期更由漫畫發展為電視、電影動畫,不單成為香港的動畫明星,更奪得多項國際大獎,為香港的動畫界爭光不少。

The 21st Century
The Way to Independent Comics
To categorize comic creation as a part of the creative industry is the result of the trend in recent years. In Hong Kong, artists who engage in comic creation are divided into various schools, and quite a number of comic artists have been working on their own - what we call independent comic artists.
We should step into a new era without the categorization of so-called "mainstream" or "non-mainstream" comics. Labels such as "underground", "alternative", "autonomous" or "independent" etc should also be given up. Over the past few decades, the talented Hong Kong independent comic artists insisted that comics must be original and keeping pace with the social trend. The feelings and unique vision of the comic artists were reflected in their exceptional works. Except a few full time comic artists, a majority of them have their own career. They all infuse their life experiences into their works, which resulted in a diversified and unique form of style.
Outstanding independent comic artist include Craig Au Yeung, Yeung Hok-tak, Siuhak and Stella So, etc, while Maggie Lau and Postgal Workshop are representatives of the new generation. Prominent works in this period are Siuhak's Fake Forensic Science and Maggie Lau's Little Horse's Silly Life. For mainstream comics, there were also new artists and creations, such as Chan Mou's The Ravages of Times and Cheng Kin-wo's Gof Legion.

21世紀
獨立漫畫冒出
從事漫畫創作的「大軍」裡還是有無數的小分隊,而這些小分隊很多更是一人獨挑大旗,身兼兵車馬砲士象卒。這也就是我們說的獨立漫畫家,如果要說是產業,也就是以一人的資產,成就其獨步人間世的事業。這一群重視並堅持原創,集編寫繪種種能力技巧於一身,強調漫畫作品必須緊貼社會時代脈搏,圖文並茂抒發個人感情和體現獨特眼界的漫畫家,在過去二三十年來談笑用兵,沒有把社會普遍認可的商業成功作為唯一判斷標準,堅持創作和發表的靈活和獨立。從投稿報刊雜誌到集資自資出版同人誌和個人作品集,同道同好並非孤軍作戰卻是相互鼓勵支持。即使小眾,就更顯出其漫畫從形式到內容的獨特,多樣而且專業。這一群漫畫家除了少數全職從事漫畫創作,大多有自己不同的職業:無論本身是建築師、設計師、插畫家、電影人、藝術行政人員,以至從事銀行、 金融、飲食服務等等各行各業,都因為對漫畫的迷戀和熱誠,或深或淺的參與到創作中,把各自的豐富的生活體驗融合到漫畫裡,呈現一種更多元更活潑更有香港時代特色的漫畫風格。
具代表性的獨立漫畫家有歐陽應齊,楊學德,小克及Stella So等,新一代則有馬仔和貓室。為人熟識的作品有小克的《偽科學鑑證》和馬仔的《我的低能之道》。這個年代主流漫畫也冒起了新的漫畫家和作品,包括陳某的《火鳳燎原》和鄭健和的《封神紀》
