Cauldshiels Hill sits brooding above Cauldshiels Loch. The loch is supposedly home to a water kelpie, a spirit in the form of a water horse which lures maidens to a watery grave.
On a clear day the views are extensive - the nearby Eildons, local hills such as Ruberslaw, Black Hill, Gala Hill and so on, eastwards to the Cheviots and away to the Southern Uplands in the west.
There's nothing to mark the actual summit, although the highest point is fairly obvious. You'll also note the outline of parts of the Iron Age fort that was located here.
The cache is located some way to the east of the summit close to the waymarked access trail. Please take care when replacing it in its hidey hole.
Paths to the top of the hill form part of the network of waymarked trails around Melrose. Not all of them are shown on OS maps, but there are excellent booklets with maps available at tourist offices and they're also freely downloadable from Scottish Borders Council's website as PDF files. A series of them covers the entire region - highly recommended.
