Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to a special place that most of the locals do not even know exists: The Aboriginal Maternity Tree.
This Red River Gum Tree (Eucalyptus Camaldulensis) known as the 'Aboriginal Maternity Tree' is believed to be around 700 years old.
Until 1840, there were many Aborigines, the Jajawurrong people, living in the district. At the time, Aboriginal law required mothers-to-be to leave their family and community when birth was imminent. The women sought comfort and safety within the cave-like trunk of the Maternity Tree.
The tree was classified on the National Heritage Register in 1985.

Please be respectful of this magnificent tree while visiting -that has served as a special place to many women in history- while searching and replace exactly as found. The cache is approx 20m from the tree itself.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we stand. I pay my respects to their Elders, past and present, and the Aboriginal Elders of other communities.
