Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

The Wild Rivers Trail is a recreational trail that runs from Spooner, WI, through Barron County to Rice Lake.  It follows County Highway SS on the old railroad bed.  The trail is used year-round by hikers, bikers, and ATV and snow machine riders.

Cache is a film canister with log only.  BYOP.

Trail can be accessed from the south where it crosses 22 1/2 Ave. For a shorter hike, you can park on the shoulder of Cty. SS about 1/8 mile north of 23rd Ave.  Cache is just off the trail.  Depending on snow cover, it may be accessible in the winter.

The name of the cache refers to the fact that there is a great blue heron rookery to the west of the trail.  In the spring, 12-15 nests are being used by these birds to raise their young.  (Binoculars are a plus.)  Also watch for them flying overhead as they bring food or return to roost in the evening.  As summer approaches and the trees completely leaf out, the view will be blocked.

Permission to place this cache was given by the Northwest District Trails Coordinator of the Wisconsin DNR.
