Geocache Description:

Nearest town: Van Wert
Earliest tombstone burial: March 1, 1857

History: Van Wert was first settled in 1853 and called Florence.  The name changed to Prairie City, then to Prairieville and in 1880 to Van Wert in honor of Van Wert, Ohio, the native home of a prominent citizen.

James Irving, one of the first settlers who came from New Jersey, gave an acre of land for the public burying ground when it became necessary to bury a baby that had died in the night.  The baby’s father, Dr. Powell (an immigrant) had camped by the side of the road where the baby died.  This was the first burial.

Another burial (grave unknown) was an Indian woman in the original acre.

Van Wert's large, well-kept cemetery located south of town is still being used today.

You are looking for a pill bottle and should not have to disturb any stones or vegetation to locate the cache. Please be respectful, do not hunt at night, do not disturb mourners, and leave this peaceful and revered place in good condition. Remember to practice CITO, always. Thank you.
