Ludlow Hut

The unassuming Ludlow Hut is located six miles west of Lake Tahoe on the northern edge of the Desolation Wilderness. Built in 1955 by friends of Bill Ludlow, a U.S. soldier from Berkeley who loved ski touring in Tahoe and was killed in the Korean War, the 15-person A-frame is near Richardson Lake and backs up to several surrounding peaks worthy of exploration. The five-mile approach follows a summer road along McKinney Creek. The road is also a favorite snowmobile route.

This cache all came about when I (Cali~Bear) put together an Event for the Jeeps - Go Topless 2015, I was invited by Robert Casebeer, founder of White Trash Brigade to hold the event in S Lake Tahoe. Great!!!

I organized a group of 15 Jeeps (NorCal Jeeps) and 1 XTerra to join us on May 16, 2015, and we would be Jeeping out to the Rubicon. Awesome! All was well until the week of the Event and snow was being predicted, ugh, so I put my Jeep top back on and packed for the trip with hopes that it would not snow! Not the case, it snowed!!

Tom and (NorCal Jeeps) I arrived in S Lake Tahoe Friday night before the event, some of White Trash Brigade were heading out to the Rubicon and I tagged along. After a slow 2 miles or so, with snow piling up on the trail and the trail getting icy, (I started sliding backwards down the hill) we decided to find the little cabin out here and call it a night. I wasn't going back to S Lake Tahoe tonight. David, Leeann, Chris, Donna, Tyler were all successful in finding the access to the cabin. That in itself was an adventure, it was hard finding the road because of the snow. Dave set off on foot and found it, we were only about 100 yards away! Got the Jeeps turned around and headed towards the cabin.

Wow! What a great cabin, it was then that I learned the name and the history of the little cabin!! Everyone unpacked and got the stoves fired up, very cozy little cabin for our group! We broke out the snacks and some drinks, kicked back in the glow of the woodstoves and I asked if they had ever heard of Geocaching.... and so the story goes, for our Night in Ludlow Hut. Thank you to Chris for having an ammo can and donating it for the cache!! Enjoy, its a great little place!
