Have you ever panned for gem stones at one of those tourist places? You get a bag of dirt seeded with rocks and such and then sift through it in a water trough. Unless they seeded in some cut stones, you won't see too much that looks like a gemstone. As a general rule you will find rocks with a hint of color. After you have gone through your bag, pulling out interesting rocks, the staff will be glad to help you identify your stones and for some nicer ones they would be glad to cut them and mount them as jewelry (for a small fee). If you don't go for the jewelry, what can you do with your stones? One option is to use a rock tumbler.
The idea with a rock tumbler is you place some of your stones in the tumbler with water and some coarse grit to wear off the less desirable parts of the stones. All of this tumbling wears the rough edges off of the stones and produces smooth, rounded pebbles. These are then run through subsequent stages with medium and fine grit to produce shiny gemstones. It is a rather loud process that takes a few days, but the outcome is actually pretty cool. What do you do with those shiny gemstones? Sorry, this cache is just about rock tumbling.
