Please park at the provided coordinates and walk to the cache site from there. If the gate is closed to the parking area there should be enough room to safely pull off and park by the gate. Please DO NOT park on the street (Park Ave.). This cache is located in a cemetery. Remember that this is sacred ground. Please treat this area with respect. Do NOT attempt at night or during services.
Latham Cemetery is located in the City of Boone near McHose Park. It has been designated as a pioneer burial ground. The cemetery can be found on the north side of Park Ave. in Boone in Section 21 of Des Moines Township. Upon first glance, you will only see three or four stones standing upright. In addition to those four stones there are at least a dozen others that are laying on the ground, entombed in the soil and grass. A majority of these stones that are lying down are either broken or very difficult to read.
The pioneers buried in this cemetery were some of the earliest known residents of Boone (it was known as Montana during this time). The earliest known burial was John O. Latham took place on July 10, 1852. There are 27 known burials here but there may have been others as well that were not marked with a headstone or reported. The final burial at Latham Cemetery was Lora May Clark and took place on August 11, 1866.
The grounds are mowed by the City of Boone and a wooden fence partially surrounds the burial grounds.
