Geocache Description:

Meehan Range 16 is the 8th of the second series for the Meehan Range. All the caches in this series are close to new mountain bike tracks so little bush bashing is required. A little zig and zag, but which? Pee on mountain bikers (if u can run fast). Contains some swappables.

The Meehan Range Nature Recreation Area is 2,700Ha and is 10km from Hobart with access at the end of Belbins Road, Cambridge. The area is great for running, walking and mountain biking with circuits from 20m minutes to three hours plus. There are a few major tracks and many minor tracks including many new mountain bike tracks in the area. The hills are steep and slippery in paces with loose stones so care is needed in places.

A good level of fitness is required for most of the caches in the set. I have set all caches close to trails that generally have a fair gradient. Cross country is fine, but harder work.

The area is mostly dry sclerophyll Eucalypt forest with evidence of quarrying gravel for the Hobart airport runway. There also used to be an "RAAF Replenishing Centre" and munitions store during WW2. Views from the ridges to the north are over Cambridge and Frederick-Henry Bay. There are at least 50 bird species that have been observed in the area. If you want to note any species, add them to http://www.ala.org.au.
