Sheep Camp Trail
Cache is located along the correction line road or Tamke Road as it is now known . Prior to 1951 no fence blocked roads and trails to the south . It was a grand remnant of the old prarie that once covered the entire west.. A lot of it had once been homesteaded but most failed in just a few years so except for a few surviving farms thousands of acres became open range once more. During the winter local farmers would turn most of their horses loose to graze the hills till spring. In the spring the U of S would send several hundred sheep with a shepherd and dogs to herd the sheep on all the open land on both sides of Beaver Creek. From the Cache site the Whitecap Trail ran due south for a mile to meet an east west trail #345 or Circle H Road as it is now called . Access to it is not allowed to the public within the Army Camp boundry's.Just south of that road along the creek was the main corral for the sheep. A second camp was built on the south side of the creek and about mid-summer the herd would move to that. The shepherd lived in a bunkhouse on wheels which moved with the herd.
The east west trail ran west for about 1/2 mile to a bridge across the creek then on for another mile to the site of Brookland School where it turned south for two miles then angled west to intersect the present route of Prov. H W -219 .
Cache is an easy find, You will see The road is sutable for most any vehicle but is not cleared of snow so use proper care in winter. Cache site is on uneaven ground to put it mildly but it was planted by a frail old man .
