天保12年（ABCD年）、北郷（昔の石井城、安養寺、岡田、坂川地域一帯）連中の寄進で建立されました。尾道の石工、宗八作の銘が刻まれています。
下久禰は江戸時代初期の地名で、航海の安全を祈願する金毘羅信仰によるものと思われます。
古老によると、岩鼻（現広島市東区矢賀新町）から現在の府中大橋を経て船越に至る近世山陽道からもその燈火が見えていたといいます。
