Polarruten #5: Jan Mayen Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,
Cervis Venator

For å finne koordinatene må følgende løses
A (Beerenberg): (VNUM + moh + siste utbrudd + 5)/126759
B (Surtsey): VNUM – ((moh + siste utbrudd)*165)-423
C (Pico Alto): (VNUM + moh + siste utbrudd) – (180*siste utbrudd)-(25*moh)+510
D (Ascension): VNUM-(100*moh)-299247
E (Queen Mary’s Peak): (190*siste utbrudd)-VNMU + (6*moh)+877
F (Bouvetøya): (VNMU Erebus – VNMU – (4*moh) + 8)/296

Description (e): Cache number five in the polar route series takes us to the island of Jan Mayen. Whether Jan Mayen can be said to be truly polar is questionable, but dependable sources describe Jan Mayen as a Norwegian polar island, so I have decided to include the island in the route.Jan Mayen is Norway’s only active volcano (and is also the northernmost active volcano in the world). Jan Mayen is located 550 km north-east of Iceland and 500 km east of Greenland, between 70°49’ and 71°10’ north latitude, and between 7°55’ and 9°5’ west longitude. Jan Mayen is named after the Dutchman Jan Jacobs May van Schellinkhout who visited the island in 1614 and who mapped part of the island’s coast.
The activity level on the island has never been high, but in the early 1900s Norwegians started to trap polar fox on the island. In 1921 the fist meteorological station was established on Jan Mayen, and the following year the Norwegian Meteorological Institute claimed part of the island on behalf of Norway. In 1926 the institute claimed the whole island, but it was first on 27 February 1930 that the island was made part of the Norwegian territory by law. The meteorological station is still in operation today. There is no permanent population on the island though – the station is manned by temporary personnel.
On 9 November 2010 most of the island was designated a natural reserve.
Jan Mayen is the northernmost of the volcanos found along the mid-Atlantic ridge, an undersea mountain chain that follows the full length of the Atlantic Ocean, from the Arctic Sea in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south. Another Norwegian island – Bouvetøya in the Southern Ocean – is the southernmost volcano found along this ridge. The mid-Atlantic ridge was formed around 55 million years ago. Volcanic activity along the ridge hasin addition to Jan Mayen and Bouvetøya created the islands of Iceland, Asorene and Penedos de São Pedro e São Paulo north of equator and Ascension, Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island south of equator.

To find the coordinates you need to solve the following
A (Beerenberg): (VNUM + masl + last eruption +5)/ 126759
B (Surtsey): VNUM – ((masl + last eruption)*165)-423
C (Pico Alto): (VNUM + masl + last eruption) – (180* last eruption)-(25*masl)+510
D (Ascension): VNUM-(100* masl)-299247
E (Queen Mary’s Peak): (190* last eruption)-VNMU + (6* masl)+877
F (Bouvetøya): (VNMU Erebus – VNMU – (4* masl) + 8)/296
