In 1869 The Allouez Mining Co started mining on Bumbletown Hill. To process the ore, it built a 3-head stamp mill on Hill creek near here. The mine worked for little profit until 1892 when both were shut down. The mill was demolished and the machinery sold for scrap. The stampsand tailings were located past the gate and have been recently coverred with earth and planted. It was a wooden mill and nothing remains.
my standard blue-top peanutbutter jar. The area beyond the gate would have been filled with stampsand. The mill processed conglomerate ore, so the sand would have been red not the normal black. The area beyond the gate has been restored, is sensitive, and should be left alone.
Note: On road in, stay left and cross Hill Creek by bridge or go right and and ford by foot
