Intro

Please respect all headstones. A lot of work has gone into making sure they remain for generations to discover.

I'm attempting to place caches in as many of Decatur County cemeteries as I can. Take your time and enjoy yourself. You don't have to stop at every headstone, but, please, slow down and look around you. Grave markers can tell a story, or at the very least make you wonder what the story really is. I'd prefer my cemetery caches not be park and grabs.

History

This cemetery holds a large significance to me personally. I grew up one block over and you can still see the back of my old house from the cemetery. Most of my paternal family is buried here. My sister, who passed away in 1994, is buried here. I used to sled here. I learned how to idle a standard transmission on a hill here. Growing up I did not respect the cemetery like I do now.

Headstones to Look For

  • Mus. John R. Daniels : Musician 16th IND, Co. A. Died from unknown causes on April 18, 1863.
  • Cpl. W.E. Metzler : 14th Inf, Co. L. Died at Yang Taun, China on August 8, 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion.
  • Pvt. John H. Barnes : Co. A 2nd Engineers. KIA near Boureaches, France on June 7, 1918.
  • 1st Lt Harrison S. Wiley : Aviation Signal Corps, 277th Aero Squadron and died from influenza in Garden City, NY on December 7, 1918.
  • WWII Crosses : 4 wooden crosses memorializing Lt. Murle F Wiley, Sgt. Franklin K Avery, 2nd Lt. Robert E Miers, and PFC Francis Wise. All were local soldiers that died during WWII.
  • The Rutherford clan: In the new section is what I like to call Rutherford clan. Within it are a number of my family including my sister, grandparents, an aunt, an uncle, plus my father has two plots as well. This is where I will probably end up one day.
