Geocache Description:

The two elephant statues in Maryhill are a mystery. There are no records kept by the council or any of the surrounding establishments as to the origin and meaning of these two beauties. Every now and then they are given paint jobs with Southern Indian symbols on the head to keep them in top shape.

As I don't know where or who the elephants came from I can only guess. The Southern Indian symbols suggest a Hindu or Sikh reference but the proximity to the Territorial Army Barracks of the 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion of The Royal Regiment of Scotland hints at a link to the old Maryhill Barracks and the Elephant and Bugle which was an inn used by army personnel on leave.

The elephants remind me of a charity "The Elephant Parade" which take over a chosen city by erecting statues of elephants in guerilla fashion, with no explanation as to why. This charity is very dear to my family and I, so on discovering these two elephants it felt like a message from a dearly departed.

If anyone has more information about these elephants I would really love to know.
