Garden of Angels Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pooh 49: Sadly it's time to archive this hide. The tree is gone and this will open up this side of the cemetery for new caches. This is such an interesting cemetery that hopefully cachers will continue to visit.

Geocache Description:

The First German Reformed Church of Akron created the German Reformed Cemetery, Mt. Peace, on 7 acres of land on the east side of Aqueduct St. between W Market and Memorial Parkway. It was established in 1880.

Mount Peace Cemetery is one of Akron’s oldest cemeteries, third only to Glendale and Bettes Cemeteries.  It is most famous for being the site of Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith’s grave (Dr. Bob), the co-founder of Alcoholics anonymous. The cemetery also features a bronze plaque with the Serenity Prayer on it not far from the grave.

From Waymarking.com:

“Alcoholics Anonymous was formed in 1935 by Dr. Holbrook as he left behind the alcohol he had used to steady himself for surgery. Until his death in 1950, Dr. Bob is credited with helping over 5000 alcoholics work to overcome their addiction. Today, AA claims more than 2 million members. There are laminated signs directing visitors from the cemetery entrance to the row of the grave.’

Mt. Peace is also the final resting place for several other notable persons.

Titanic survivors, Addie Wells and her two children are interred at Mt. Peace

From OHIO’S TITANIC GRAVESITES

“Addie Wells boarded the Titanic with her two young children, Joan and Ralph, in Southampton. They were bound for Akron, Ohio, to join her husband, Arthur Henry Wells, who had come ahead of them to set up their new home. After the ship hit the iceberg, Addie gathered her children and headed for the boat deck. Once there they were all loaded onto lifeboat number fourteen, which was so crowded that Addie could not even sit down. After arriving in New York, Addie and the children were met by her husband and her brother, who had travelled all the way from Akron to meet them.”
