Geocache Description:

This series is geared toward the geocacher just getting started in the game. Most of these are based on caches originally hidden by short circuit 2, a prolific member of our local community who is now hiding caches for us in the great beyond.

You are looking for a well camouflaged bison tube in an area that has a tremendous ebb and flow of people. Plan accordingly and this should be an easy grab.

Two monuments for the price of one! There are two civic monuments just over .10 miles apart at the foot of Canal Boulevard where the streetcars meet the cemeteries. We will include both in this cache description, as BrewSleuth’s funny cache “Exit Pole” is now located near the second monument. Stop by and log that one when you visit the boulder monument.

This particular cache is located at a stone eagle surrounded by vegetation and crepe myrtles. On one side is the streetcar stop, on the other is the bus pavilion. Both can generate lots of observers at a moment’s notice.

Let’s see whet the short circuit2 Guidebook (Lakeview Walking Tour edition) has to say about our stone eagle.

“The Wedell monument located on Canal Boulevard is one of four civic monuments in Lakeview. The others are a granite boulder to memory of George Thomas , the third is 30 Crepe Myrtles planted for the boys who died in world war 1, and the last is the statue of Mother Cabrini.

Jimmy Wedell was renowned for his pioneering aircraft designs. Wedell broke the existing world record in February,1934 as part of opening ceremonies of Sushan(now Lakefront) Airport.

This is the second of four civic monuments [in Lakeview]. It is dedicated to George Thomas. the plaque reads ‘In appreciation of the fine work of George Thomas Supt. New Orleans parkways Commission 1925-1934 towards the the greater beauty of the city.’”

As best I can tell, the record mentioned was for the speed record in a “land plane” of 305.33 mph set using a plane of his own design in 1933. That’s a bit before the airport opened, but it’s still a record from an early New Orleans aviator.
