Alonzo Hill, Veteran of the Civil War
Soldier, Teacher, Professor, College President
Born in Fosters, Alabama (his mother’s maiden name being Foster, her family the namesake for the community) Alonzo attended Manley Academy which was located in Fosters. When the civil war broke out, Alonzo joined the Confederate Army at the age of 16. He served in Company D of the Second Alabama Cavalry under Colonel J. J. Pegues from Tuscaloosa.
After the was Alonzo returned to Tuscaloosa and found the University in such a disturbed shape that he moved to Virginia. He attended and graduated from the University of Virginia majoring in Latin and Mathematics. He then taught at high schools in Virginia and Mississippi before becoming a Professor at the Tuscaloosa Female College. He became the President of the college in 1876, then purchased the college 1878.
Alonzo died in 1894; and the college was purchased by a group of investors. The University had, at this time, begun accepting females as students and the need for a Female College. The property, which was located on the east side of Queen City Avenue at the 6th Street intersection, was sold and later developed into a subdivision now known as College Park.
