La denominazione di VARANO deriva dal vocabolo celtico“VAR”che indica una località vicina alle acque.
Nel periodo medioevale, risulta che Varano era posto nel feudo di Angera, che faceva parte del contado di Seprio di cui era Signore l’arcivescovo di Milano.
Sul finire del secolo decimottavo, Varano divenne proprietà di Fedele Borghi da Gallarate. Per breve periodo, parte del paese fu possesso dei Dandolo di Varese.
Quest’ultimo volendosene disfare, l’offrì ad un certo Ponzellini di Ternate il quale però, non avendo i soldi per l’acquisto, li chiese in prestito ad uno dei figli di Fedele Borghi. Questi, invece di prestarsi al mutuo, ritenne più opportuno acquistare in proprio il tratto di paese.
Dal 1826 Varano fu proprietà dei Borghi.
Varano fu eretto a Comune nel 1808, staccandosi da quello di Ternate; nel 1906 assunse la denominazione aggiuntiva di Borghi, che vi introdusse la lavorazione del cotone. Varano Borghi sino al 1927 apparteneva alla provincia di Como. Ora è Comune in provincia di Varese.
L’abitato sorge all’estremità meridionale del pianalto morenico che separa la conca del lago di Monate da quella del lago di Varese, spingendosi anche nel fondo valle del Canale Brabbia.
