Geocache Description:

One of the points of interest on the pilgrimage path beside Lough Derg - the last before the forest

The cache is the third in a series of four leading you on a round trip walk of 12km called "St. Partick's Purgatory"(the fourth is another 4km further on through the forest - St. Patrick's Purgatory View

There is room for a few cars beside the cache - this is a far as the public road goes before you enter the foret, but it is a nice walk if you park at the pilgrimage centre.

There is a picnic table here as well.

The well itself was under water when we visited.

The walk to the cache is based on the route of a pilgrimage path which has been in use since the 12th century. The route is fully sign-posted by little yellow bishops and extends through the Coillte forest. In addition to its historical interest, the walk also offers exception lakeside views of Lough Derg and the surrounding countryside. A number of spurs allow access to view points and sites of historical interest.

To get there, head into Pettigo and take the R233 for about 7.5 kms, following the signs for Lough Derg. This will take you to the ferry point for St.Patrick’s Purgatory where there is a car park and the start of the walk.

The related web site is a full description of the walk on the Donegal County Development Board web site. The cache is a small plastic box. It started with a Ballindrait to Letterkenny rail ticket, a toy soldier and a small coin in addition to the log book - BYOP
