A white-painted post mill with an open trestle, Chillenden windmill is a well-known landmark in this rural area of the county. Built in 1868-9, it replaced an earlier post mill on the same site. The mill ceased regular work in 1949. It was preserved in the 1950's and, although restored many times, it collapsed in a gale in November, 2003. Happily, this was not the end of the story, for the mill has been rebuilt and should stand as a landmark for several years to come.
