This cache will take you on an adventure into an unknown mine hidden in the depths of the mountains. The start of your journey will be at the posted parking coordinates. From there, hike straight down the road until you reach Lewis Creek. The bridge has been removed, but large rounds of wood make crossing easy. Immediately after you have crossed the creek, turn right. (Left would take you toward Sugar Pine and Red Rock Falls). After you turn right, you will be faced with a fork in the trail. Take the upward trail to the left. (Turning right would lead you downstream). From there, hike to the posted coordinates. As your journey continues, you will see the remains of an old cabin that possibly belonged to Charles Clifford Corlieu, a local prospector who lived in the area during the early 1860s to late 1920s. He is said to be buried in the area.
One of my sources claims that a crook by the name of Sam Mobley lived in the area and created this mine in an attempt to fool prospective gold miners into purchasing his property. Another rumor states that this area is connected to the fabled Lost Dutchman Mine. In any case, there is the possibility of finding hidden treasure.
Once you reach GZ, you will immediately notice the opening to the mine. At this point you will either need shorts and water shoes, or a pair of waders. The water level is low at this point and time and the bottom of the mine is visible. Since your GPS will most likely be unusable inside the mine, use the following directions:
Hike into the cave until it splits into a Y. Turn right and continue until the mine ends. From there, begin your search for the cache. On your way out, be sure to try the rock climbing hand-holds on the roof of the mine. Make sure to bring a good flashlight. This cache is not for the claustrophobic or faint of heart. Watch out for snakes, ticks, bears, mountain lions and other wild creatures. It would be a good idea to search for this cache with a friend. Have fun and keep on caching! Congrats to Ham3 (and FJ JAY) for an extreme FTF!
