Greatland Reviewer: Hello Geoff808:

This cache page has been archived due to the lack of response to one or more prior Reviewer Note(s) about issue(s) with the cache. If you would like to have the cache unarchived, please contact me through my profile as soon as possible before another cache gets placed nearby.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page requires it to go through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

Geocache Description:

The cache is in a plastic case.  It contains a travel bug, a where's george dollar and a happy face spider wooden nickel.  CAUTION: Do not climb the monkey pod trees or touch the konani stones.  "Kapu" means "hands off".  You will not find the geocache near these important features.

The Old Kohala Courthouse is the oldest west of the Rockies.  Now it is used by the local senior citizens, and the actual courthouse is in the more modern buildings behind.  In front of the courthouse is the original Kamehameha I statue.  This statue was originally to be placed in this spot, but it was re-routed to Honolulu.  However the first statue fell overboard, and a second one was created, which is now displayed in front of Iolani Palace in Honolulu.  Two ancient and gigantic monkeypod trees grow next to the old courthouse.  Please read the signs and do not try to climb them.  Next to the trees are several large konani (Hawaiian checkers) stones.  These stones were actually brought from the seashore, where they were used by the chiefly class.  They are historic and not to be disturbed.

Across the street is the green building which used to contain the public library.  Next to it is a Catholic cemetery.  The church is now gone.

The bank next to the Civic Center closed a few years ago due to earthquake damage.  The same earthquake heavily damaged the Kalahikiola Congregational Church on the Bond Estate, just up the road, as well as St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona.
