Teatr "Komedia" rozpoczął działalność w 1957 r. w gmachu wybudowanym w 1952 r. przy ulicy Sierpeckiej 7 róg Próchnika, wpisanym później do rejestru zabytków, o uroczym wnętrzu, doskonałej akustyce i widoczności (układ amfiteatralny) pozwalającym na prezentowanie różnorodnych spektakli.
Pierwszym spektaklem rozpoczynającym działalność Teatru "Komedia" była premiera musicalu pt. "Kiss me Kate" Cola Portera z polskim tekstem Janusza Minkiewicza i Antoniego Marianowicza, w reżyserii Jerzego Rakowieckiego i scenografią Jana Kosińskiego. Wydarzenie to miało miejsce 14 września 1957 r.
Od początku swego istnienia Teatr prezentował głównie komedie klasyczne, a wśród nich: "Gwałtu co się dzieje" i "Dożywocie" Aleksandra Fredry, komedie muzyczne i śpiewogry jak: "Ja się nie boję braci Rojek" K.I. Gałczyńskiego, "Kram z piosenkami" Leona Schillera w reżyserii Olgi Lipińskiej, oraz spektakle dla dzieci i młodzieży: "Pierścień i róża", "Krasnoludki, krasnoludki".
W styczniu 1990 r. Teatr zmienił nazwę na "Północne Centrum Sztuki". W 1992 r. po rozpoczęciu działalności artystycznej na zasadach impresaryjnych, do nazwy Północne Centrum Sztuki dodana została ponownie nazwa Teatr Komedia. W tym też roku nastąpił powrót do tradycji repertuarowych sprzed 1990 r. i na scenie pojawiły się przedstawienia z repertuaru klasycznego, w tym m.in.: "Pan Tadeusz" Adama Mickiewicza w reżyserii Jana Englerta, śpiewogry i musicale takie jak: "Pan Twardowski" w reżyserii Krzysztofa Jasińskiego, "Fame" w reżyserii Wojciecha Kępczyńskiego, komedie i farsy, i inne.
Teatr Komedia to scena dla widzów, którzy chcą zapomnieć o trudach codzienności i choć na dwie godziny oddać - wraz z płaszczem - swój życiowy stres do szatni. Teatr Komedia to również "wehikuł czasu", zabierający dzieci w dalekie podróże po kolorowych, baśniowych krainach; a jak wiadomo, bajki uczą przyjaźni, harmonii duszy, dobroci dla ludzi. Są kluczem otwierającym serca wdzięcznej, dziecięcej widowni.
Tak więc Komedia pragnie ofiarować widzom uśmiech i relaks, a zarazem przypominać, że teatr to jest takie miejsce dziwne, w którym jest wszystko tak jak w... teatrze, a nie jak w życiu.
