The Columbia Cosmopolitan Recreation Area was not always the peaceful park of today. Prior to 1969, the parking lots were once portions of long runways belonging to the Columbia Municipal Airport. Loud and thunderous engines overhead connected the community to far away locales and were used to instruct interested citizens on their operation. But this, too, was a successor to an original business opened by the Allton brothers in the 1920's. They eventually sold the airfield to Columbia but continued on with a lucrative Ford dealership near the intersection of Hitt and Broadway downtown.
Now, it is your turn to explore this historic airfield! Your journey will begin at the Burford shelter. Look at the map to the right and follow the directions closely. It is up to you to find the hidden treasure of the Allton Flying Service!
The park is open between 6:00 AM and 11:59 PM. Permission to place this geocache was kindly granted by Lida Gouchenour of the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department.
