The Shoal Sculpture was made from Opie wood and mirrored steel and reflects the history of the river and the community links to the salmon fishing industry. Two sculptures were commissioned and were developed in 2008 by the project artist Charlotte Howarth with the help of a cross community group of thirty local young people. One sculpture stands on each side of the Foyle, almost opposite each other and one can be clearly seen from the other. On the posts on one side of the river the fish point upwards to show they are moving upstream and on the other sculpture they point down for downstream.
The sculpture here has been through a tougher time than its counterpart across the river and has been subject to graffiti and damage to the telescope. However, the mindless cannot damage the views and the sight of the mighty Foyle meandering past, especially at sunset, is lovely to behold.
The cache is a micro and when found please replace carefully and ensure that as you leave it, it stays in place. Its twin on the East bank is cache GC5XMXD.
