On 10th July 2002 a Bell 260 helicopter carrying senior members of the Cypriot Armed Forces crashed into a ravine just outside the village of Kouklia, with everybody aboard being killed. This monument is to honour the military personnel and there is one Eagle for each person aboard. The site also contains remains of the helicopter and pictures of the deceased. The cause of the crash has never been determined.
The main gates have always been padlocked closed when we have been there, but the little side gate is usually open and it is possible to enter and wander around the site respectfully.
As always in Cyprus, take plenty of drinking water and keep your eyes open for snakes.
