Ciao. Se siete arrivati fin qui ora vi trovate in una delle parti più antiche della città, una delle prime isole ad essere abitate. La chiesa davanti a voi, dedicata a S.Nicolò di Myra, risale al XII sec. anche se rimaneggiata più volte nel tempo. Tuttavia si ipotizza che la prima chiesa, sulla quale questa è costruita, risalisse al VII sec.
Il nome san Nicolò dei Mendicoli deriva probabilmente da mendici, mendicanti, cioè dalle condizioni di vita della povera gente, in maggioranza pescatori ed artigiani, che abitava la zona.
Una seconda ipotesi vede il nome derivare da una storpiatura di Mendigola, che sarebbe l'antico nome dell'isola su cui la chiesa è eretta.
Dal nome del santo deriva quindi il nome di "Nicolotti" per la fazione popolare che viveva in questa zona, rivale dell'analoga fazione dei "Castellani", abitanti a Est della città nella zona di Castello. Hi! You are in one of the oldest parts of the city, one of the first islands to be inhabited.
