Geocache Description:

Balkan craftsmen - the last warriors

Vanishing of the old crafts and handicrafts is a global trend. In the era of high technology and mass production, in Serbia you can still meet artisans, who like the “last warriors” try to preserve old crafts and family traditions. They are fighting to protect the ancient manufacturing processes and techniques working in small shops, in old houses and cellars.

Silverhandicraft - filigran

In such way, the knowledge and skills of the old masters, as basic life activities that embody crafts and skills are, somehow, preserved. However, in some cases, handicraft gradually is supplemented or substitude with other products.

This cache will walk you thru a small part of Belgrade, where you can still see the way of manufacturing and traditional tools among these once highly esteemed artisans. Take advantage to peek into their workshops, touch, take a look, smell and taste their products! Golden hands of these masters deserve much more than a short sightseeing of tourists, but it is a problem that does not fall within our domain. If you can and want to, buy some of their products (I bought a nice leather bag), talk about their work, take few photos and upload this story back to the countries you come from. This will be your support and sign of respect for manual work, which silently leaves our lives.

Unfortunately, many good things don't last forever, so that kiosk has lost its battle with - who knows, but it is gone. Cache: micro magnetic, plastic container.

NB: When checking on this cache in June 2023, I was sad to see that some places are changed, some shops were closed. It seems that few warriors left the battlefield... In February 2025 a geocacher Tungmar informed me that the last stop - the barbeque shop is closed too. He provided me with new data and put a new container, so I could updated this listing for which I thank him very much.
