Geocache Description:

Please join us at Cape Breton Highlands National Park Chéticamp Visitor Centre from 2 to 4 pm on July 19th, 2015 to celebrate Parks Day. The main idea to show the general public how to geocache and how to use GPS units. If you haven't already tried the CBH National Park passport geocaches, there will be some paper passports on hand, along with some friendly helpers to get you started.

The event itself is wheelchair accessible but the caches are not.

Learn the many uses of GPS units, how to use them and have fun.  The afternoon will involve an geocaching information session and some demonstration geocaches on site. You are welcome to bring your own GPS unit to learn to use (you  must be able to enter coordinates).  A limited number of GPS's can be provided.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. We will meet at the Visitor Centre in the park. Dress for weather conditions.  You will be walking in a wooded area, so wear appropriate footwear.  Bring hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a GPS unit if you have one.   For more information, please contact Kersti at kersti.tacreiter@pc.gc.ca or phone (902) 285-2087.

The two main routes to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park Chéticamp entrance of the park are:

  • via Route 19 (Ceilidh Trail), which leads you through Judique, Mabou, Inverness and Margaree Harbour. Route 19 begins at the rotary in Port Hastings, on the "island" side of the Canso Causeway.
  • via the Cabot Trail (West), traveling through Middle River, Lake O'Law, Margaree Harbour. This part of the Cabot Trail may be accessed from Exit 7 of the TransCanada Highway 105, in Nyanza.

A park pass is required for use of all services and facilities in the national park including campgrounds, the Highlands Links Golf Course, and the Keltic Lodge Resort and Spa. Revenues are used to maintain and improve park services, such as the park's 26 hiking trails, the viewpoints and exhibits, beaches, picnic areas and playgrounds, the visitor centres and clean washrooms, and the weekly activities in July and August.
