Explanation (Level 2 Puzzlers)
Type: Book Code
Book codes have likely been around since books were widely reproduced. Examples include Benedict Arnold and nearly every crime show on TV seems to need one episode where a book code is used.
Book codes usually involve replacing the words or letters of the secret message with numbers sets. While the number set can vary it can indicate the page, column, paragraph, word or even letter position in the word. Often the number set will lead to a whole word, but the trouble with this is that all words may not be available in the book you are using for the code.
Possible give aways:
-
Book codes tend to be fairly secure. As long as the book is not known it is very tough to crack.
-
As far as recognizing it, I usually look for the first number in the number set (page number) to be much larger than the following numbers.
-
In this case we will get you along the way.
